Will the US orange juice industry get caught up in a trade war with the European Union

Will the US orange juice industry get caught up in a trade war with the European Union

EU      The European Union (EU) is considering retaliatory tariffs against the US if President Donald Trump follows through on his plan to impose restrictions on the imports of steel, according to a new report in the Financial Times (FT). Officials in the EU are weighing up the possibility of imposing tariffs on agricultural products from the US including orange juice if Trump follows through with a steel tariff said the FT.

The EU is not a large importer of steel from the US, so the measure focuses more on goods that the EU brings in from the US, says the report.

This is just the second move in what analysts say could be a series tit-for-tat of actions leading to a slowing of international trade, which could have serious implications for the Florida orange juice industry – already reeling from the ongoing effects of citrus greening.

Costa Rica sees a rise in exports of fruit purees and paste.

Costa Rica sees a rise in exports of fruit purees and paste.

COSTA RICA     Exports of fruit purees and pastes have increased in the last three years, from USD22 million in 2013 to USD81 million in 2016, according to Procomer, the Costa Rican Foreign Trade Promoter with the first four months of 2017 already seeing sales at USD32.4 million.

Karina López, Procomer Market Research Co-ordinator, said that the main product shipped abroad by Costa Rica was banana puree and that sales were on the rise due to consumer trends, particularly in Europe, preferring fruit juices and foods with natural contents that don’t have other components.

Lopez added that fruit juice manufacturers, yogurt makers, jam makers amongst others have become major buyers of tropical fruit purees and pastes with the Netherlands overtaking the United States as the major destination.

The puree industry uses fruits with excellent quality but that can’t be exported in fresh because they present minimal deformities or because they have sharp blows caused in the harvest and transport towards the packing plants.
